Wuppertal

Wupperthal is a small town situated in the West Coast region of the Western Cape, South Africa.

Geography and History

Hidden at the end of the twisting Koueberg Pass lies Wupperthal which was established in 1830. In this area there is small scale farming and grows organic Rooibos Tea. 

The village remains isolated, and is accessible by a gravel road from Clanwilliam over the Pakhuis Pass. Community facilities include the Moravian Church, a shop, a tea room, a post office, a school with two hostels and a community hall.

Most families in the community are dependent on small-scale agriculture or livestock farming for their livelihood. The most important cash crop is the rooibos tea. 

Activities

In spring (August-September) the region is transformed into kaleidoscopic carpets, as wild flowers bloom following the winter rains.  The  beautifully preserved rugged terrain of Wupperthal and the Cedarberg offers a variety of activities to do for every visitor including canoeing, water-skiing; abseiling, river rafting, hiking and climbing.
