Geography and History

Paternoster is one of the last traditional fishing villages on the West Coast. It is a very romantic and peaceful place on this scenic and wonderful coastline.

Situated approximately 145 km North of Cape Town, Paternoster is a town full of vibrancy and the charm of the local community is as colourful today as it was a hundred years ago.

The name means 'Our Father', and is said to be name so after the heartfelt prayers of shipwrecked Portuguese sailors. Due to strict development guidelines, the village retains an authentic atmosphere with whitewashed homes against a cobalt-blue Atlantic Ocean.

Activities

The Cape Columbine Nature Reserve with the well-known 'Tietiesbaai' offers beautiful wildflowers during August and September. Whales and dolphins also visit these waters for ten months of the year.

There are many activities on offer including: sea kayaking, whale, dolphin, seal and penguin watching, walks along the sandy beach or among the boulders.

For bird lovers, Paternoster is home to over 250 species of birds with seabirds (Seagulls, cormorants, sacred ibis and the Oystercatcher) using this coastline as their breeding ground.

Fresh seafood caught daily by local fisherman, can be enjoyed at a number of local restaurants. There are many restaurants on offer to suit every visitors budget.
