General Information on Hopefield

Hopefield was founded on the banks of the Zoute River in 1853 and was originally developed as a church community. It is located in the West Coast region of the Western Cape, South Africa. Hopefield is situated on the R45, only 130 km from Cape Town, in the heart of Fynbos country.

Sitting along the eastern bank of the Zoute creek which turns into a river in winter, Hopefield seems to be perpetually green. Fossils were discovered in this town which included the skull of the so-called 'Saldanha Man'. A replica of this is on display in the information office picturing life in the region some five hundred thousand years ago. Hopefield also forms part of the Cape West Coast Biosphere Reserve.

Attractions in the area include the archaeological site on the farm Elandsfontein where fossil bones and human artefacts date back to the early Stone Age. The nearby Fossil Park is a must-see for any tourist.

The beautiful Hopefield Dutch Reformed Church built in 1879 (the organ still plays on Sundays) and examples of the Hartebeeshuisie or reed house, traditional homes of the area, are all something to see. Other activites include hiking within the Reserve.
