General Information

The Riebeek Valley encompasses Riebeek Kasteel and Riebeek West as the two main areas of the Valley. Located in the Western Cape Province of South Africa, it is believed to be one of the oldest areas in the country. At just approximately 80kms north-east of Cape Town the towns are easily accessible to tourists and is popular for day visitors from the Mother City as well.

In 1661 Commander Jan van Riebeeck under the leadership of Corporal Pieter Cruythoff, set off on an expedition of inland discovery in the direction of Paardeberg. When they ascended a mountain (Kasteelberg Mountain) overlooking the fertile area of the Riebeek Valley, they then named the one town Riebeek Kasteel in honour of the Commander.

During the 1900's the towns were laid out as farmers began establishing themselves. It was then that The Royal Hotel was born which today is the oldest hotel in South Africa. The Riebeek Valley is popular for its surrounding beauty and rural atmosphere.

The area is mostly known for its wines, wheat and olives, and is home to several wineries and olive oil producers. The cellars are open to visitors for tastings and tours. Many writers, painters and other artists have made the valley their home eliciting an arty, alternative atmosphere which only makes the area more appealing.

Although quaint and quiet the Riebeek Valley certainly has plenty to offer visitors. For the outdoor enthusiast there are hiking and mountain bike trails and 4x4 routes. The tourism office in Riebeek Kasteel will guide you to the best possible route.
