Nature Conservancy to form west coast corridor

The Cape Columbine Conservancy by CapeNature aims to eventually form a coastline corridor from Paternoster to Saldanha Bay.

Andre Kruger, Saldanha Bay Municipality councillor, announced at the launch that the conservancy would link the Cape Columbine nature reserve with that of Saldanha Bay, the Langebaan nature reserve to the south and the Groot Paternoster private nature reserve to the north. He said if all the proposed actions were maintained and expanded, they would support conservation development. The area covers 2 500 hectares.

Chairperson of the Cape Columbine Conservancy, Gustav Bester, said the goal was to balance nature conservation and development, Bester said many actions within the reserves needed management. “For example, the Cape Columbine Nature Reserve – or Tietiesbaai – of only 263ha is already under pressure from too many visitors.” He said many people with four-wheel-drive vehicles and motorcycles had been illegally driving in the veld.

A small portion of the development has been determined as a critical biodiversity area with plant species requiring conservation.
